About the RWVE Hematology Team

The Real-World Value and Evidence (RWVE) Hematology team operates at the intersection of science, strategy, and patient care. Its core mission is to advance patient care through the generation of real-world evidence. Across the product lifecycle—from prelaunch evidence planning through post-approval value demonstration—the RWVE team designs and executes real-world studies, develops economic models, and translates findings into actionable insights for patients, providers, payers, and other decision-makers. The team collaborates closely with cross-functional partners, including Medical Affairs, Market Access, Health Economics, and global functions. This collaborative environment exposes fellows to the breadth of evidence-generation activities and decision-making processes within a major pharmaceutical company.

Program and Structure

The HOPE–J&J RWVE Hematology Fellowship is a two-year PharmD fellowship that combines immersive industry experience in hematology with rigorous academic training in outcomes research and real-world evidence (RWE).

Fellows spend two years fully embedded within the J&J Hematology team, gaining continuity, increasing project ownership, and hands-on experience in evidence generation across the product lifecycle. Working alongside experienced J&J scientists, fellows collaborate with cross-functional partners to understand how clinical, real-world, economic, and patient-centered evidence informs strategic decision-making and supports patient care.

Concurrently, fellows complete graduate coursework through Rutgers HOPE and conduct an independent RWE capstone project using large real-world datasets. The capstone is designed for presentation at ISPOR and, when appropriate, submission to a peer-reviewed journal, providing meaningful experience in scientific dissemination.

Potential Areas of Experience

The fellowship exposes fellows to a broad range of evidence-generation activities in hematology. Depending on project needs, fellows can expect to build expertise in the following areas:

  • Year 1 provides broad exposure and orientation while progressively increasing the fellow’s contributions to active projects. The fellow is expected to:

    • Gain exposure to the J&J organization, therapeutic landscape, and evidence needs
    • Support RWE and other evidence-generation projects
    • Collaborate with cross-functional partners across the product lifecycle
    • Develop skills in study design, data interpretation, project management, and scientific communication
    • Complete the majority of Rutgers graduate coursework in RWE
    • Design and initiate an independent Rutgers HOPE capstone project using large real-world data
    • Participate in HOPE seminars, professional development, and ISPOR activities
  • During Year 2, the fellow progresses toward greater independence, project ownership, and leadership. The fellow is expected to:

    • Lead components of hematology evidence-generation projects
    • Contribute to evidence strategy and strategic recommendations
    • Communicate findings to cross-functional and senior stakeholders
    • Deepen quantitative and methodological expertise through applied research
    • Complete remaining Rutgers coursework and academic requirements
    • Complete and disseminate the capstone through an ISPOR presentation and, when appropriate, peer-reviewed publication
    • Mentor and support incoming fellows and other trainees

Required Qualifications

  • PharmD degree completed prior to the fellowship start date
  • Strong interest in RWE and the pharmaceutical industry
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior research or publication experience
  • Programming exposure in SAS, R, or Python
  • Coursework or hands-on experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, or health economics
  • Clinical exposure in hematology or oncology
