Certificate Programs

The goal of the HOPE certificate is to expose the learner to foundational concepts relevant to the field of health economics, outcomes, and research (HEOR). The certificate will be particularly useful for students considering HEOR career paths with the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, health insurance payers, and government healthcare agencies.

Competencies

Upon completion of the Certificate in HOPE, each student will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate analyses of the economic and patient outcomes impact of new and existing medical treatments in terms of design, methods, and data sources
  2. Use statistical software to conduct basic analyses of health outcomes, health care costs, health policy, and health economics
  3. Articulate the policy implications of analyses on the economic and patient outcome impact of medical treatments to relevant stakeholder audiences including healthcare payers, providers, and patients

Curriculum Requirements

Cert-Only Students (18 credits)

Courses are available in-person, remote and/or online, varying by semester and course.

  • PHCO 0501 – Health Systems and Policy (3 cr.)
  • PHCO 0502 – Principles and Methods of Epidemiology (3 cr.)
  • PHCO 0504 – Introduction to Biostatistics (3 cr.) [Prerequisite: Quantitative Skills Assessment] 
  • HOPE 9509 – Pharmacoeconomic Modeling (3 cr.)
  • HOPE 9563 – Introduction to Outcomes Research (3 cr.)

      –AND–

Choose one of the following:

  • BIST 0535 – Biostatistical Computing (3 cr.)
  • EPID 0672 – Pharmacoepidemiology and Therapeutic Risk Management (3 cr.)

Graduates of CEPH-accredited schools and programs of public health may transfer up to six (6) credits towards a certificate program if earned within the past seven years with a grade of B or better and are deemed appropriate by the respective Certificate Program Coordinator.

Students Currently Enrolled in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or Pharmacoepidemiology Concentrations (15 credits)

  • PHCO 0501 – Health Systems and Policy (3 cr.)
  • BIST 0535 – Biostatistical Computing (3 cr.)
  • EPID 0672 – Pharmacoepidemiology and Therapeutic Risk Management (3 cr.)
  • HOPE 9509 – Pharmacoeconomic Modeling (3 cr.)
  • HOPE 9563 – Introduction to Outcomes Research (3 cr.)

*Students must be currently enrolled at the Rutgers School of Public Health. Prerequisite: PHCO 0502 Principles and Methods of Epidemiology (3 credits) and PHCO 0504 Introduction to Biostatistics (3 credits) or equivalent courses.

The sequence of courses may be taken over a four-semester time period or shorter.

Admission Requirements and Application

Applicants must have:

  • Completed an accredited undergraduate program in the U.S. or its equivalent
  • Demonstrated academic achievement in an appropriate discipline

Applicants must submit:

  • Application for Admission
  • Official transcripts of all prior work
  • Letter of intent, including statement of purpose for application to the program
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation
  • Application fee

International applicants must submit:

  • TOEFL scores and WES evaluations
